This course includes four sessions, each two hours long. The MTEL General Curriculum Multi-Subject prep course begins with an introduction to essential test-taking strategies and the Open Response, then concludes with a three-week review of the specific content included—and what is NOT included—on the exam; we focus on only what is necessary to pass. Test-taking skills and strategies are the focus of the first session and interwoven through each subsequent session. This class meets together with the Early Childhood class. Where the exams differ is highlighted, but most of the science, history, and ELA content is the same. The curriculum is a copywritten series of documents and practice exams written specifically for this MTEL. The MTEL General Curriculum Multi-Subject and the ETI guarantee* are included with the program fee. Recommended study materials (which are NOT included in the fee and must be purchased separately if you want them) are: Everything You Need to Know About World History Homework Everything You Need to Know About American History Homework Everything You Need to Know About Geography Homework Everything You Need to Know About Science Homework All by Zeman and Kelley and published by Scholastic books—they are available on Amazon.
  • Session 1: The instructor guides students through reliable test-taking strategies. Students learn how to recognize multiple choice answers designed to distract or confuse them. They discover the best logical process for narrowing down answer choices. This is unlike other “test-taking strategy” session you have experienced. Multiple-choice exams are a game, but you have not been taught the rules—it’s unfair. This session will give you the tools you need to play the game. You will learn how to NOT fall for attractors, answer choices written specifically to confuse you, how and when to apply the “process of elimination,” and even how to correctly answer questions that you do not know the answer toLogic and phenomenology drove the development of this program, and it will change the way you experience and approach multiple-choice exams. Finally, the instructor reviews the open response (OR), highlighting what graders look for and how to compose an answer that hits all the marks. Current and past MTELs are provided to review and practice the test-taking skills and strategies. Practice OR questions based on MTEL standards are provided for practice.
  • Session 2: The instructor teaches information needed for the science portion of this MTEL. The basic science concepts from biology, chemistry, geology, engineering, and physics are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on Open Response content and more complex topics (such as Punnett squares and genetics). Many topics such as “MTEL-worthy scientists” and plant biology are included in the provided materials for student review after class. Students complete practice tests created using MTEL standards.
  • Session 3: The instructor teaches information needed for the history portion of this MTEL. Starting with the Agricultural Revolution, history is taught not by memorizing dates but by thinking about the zeitgeist, the spirit of times, of each important historical period. Understanding how people thought and how each historical period influenced the next aids our ability to comprehend the people and events we will study. Emphasis is placed on OR content and more complex and interconnected topics. Many topics and key terms to know are included for student review after class. Students complete practice tests created using MTEL standards.
  • Session 4: The instructor teaches information needed for the English and language arts portion of this MTEL. Literary devices/terms, narrative forms, poetry, “MTEL-worthy authors” are discussed and placed in context. Important conceptual topics such as “the writing process,” parts of speech, and necessary grammar/usage/punctuation are reviewed. Many skills and strategies are covered while reviewing a practice test created from MTEL standards. Further study materials are available for grammar/usage/punctuation review.

  • Session 1: The first class will focus on the basics of the exam and the best strategies to apply in order to pass. The instructor guides students through reliable test-taking strategies. Students learn how to recognize multiple choice answers designed to distract or confuse them. They discover the best logical process for narrowing down answer choices. This is unlike other “test-taking strategy” sessions you have experienced. Multiple-choice exams are a game, but you have not been taught the rules—it’s unfair. Logic and phenomenology drove the development of this program, and it will change the way you experience and approach multiple-choice exams.
  • Session 2: The instructor reviews the open response (OR), highlighting what graders look for and how to compose an answer that fulfills each of the four prompts. Current and past MTELs are provided to review and practice the test-taking skills and strategies. Practice OR questions based on real MTEL content are provided for practice. You will be given appropriate language to use to assist your preparation for any open response you see come test day.
  • Session 3: While the recently updated Early Childhood MTEL no longer requires a knowledge of a depth of history, science, English, or math, many important academic concepts in these disciplines are critical to understand to do well. These concepts, such as maps/globes, the scientific method and experimental design, and the writing process, will be covered in detail.
  • Session 4: Much of the focus of the new exam is on instructional strategies. However, the questions can be complex and language dense. This session will focus on how to approach these questions and determine which answer choices to eliminate and which to select as the correct answer.
Each of the following six sessions is two hours long. Our MTEL General Curriculum Math test preparation course covers all the concepts that will appear on the MTEL as well as essential test-taking strategies. Students learn how to avoid the trap of misleading questions and how to tailor their open response to meet the standards of MTEL graders. Believe it or not, the math on this exam is not advanced. The questions are difficult because of the way the test makers package the questions. They are written to confound and confuse; the test taker is often unable to recognize the concepts embedded in the questions and the skills necessary to employ to solve them. MTEL General Curriculum Math program is designed to teach you the basic math skills required to pass the exam, teaching you how to understand what questions are really asking, and emphasizing the strategies necessary to attack and solve each question.  Each session begins with students’ questions and a review of the previous session’s homework.
  • Session 1: The instructor reviews essential mathematics vocabulary and explains how vocabulary can be used to zero in on correct answers and avoid common pitfalls. Students also learn basic test-taking strategies that can be applied to basic and more advanced MTEL math topics. Basic operations and concepts of fractions, decimals, and percentages and their elegant relationship are emphasized. Basic skills and strategies are taught and emphasized by talking through and solving problems together with the instructor. Homework is assigned to review concepts learned in class.
  • Session 2: Student questions on previous content and HW are fielded. The instructor reviews the MTEL-critical concepts of ratios, proportions, place value, and number lines. Concepts are explained and examined by completing problems together. Students work more independently as more content is understood and confidence gained. Problems based on MTEL standards are woven into the session to review important concepts, skills, and strategies. Homework is assigned to review concepts learned in class.
  • Session 3: Student questions on previous content and HW are fielded. Students move on to studying algebra and functions. The basics of the coordinate plane, graphing lines, and slope are pre-taught. More advanced test-taking skills are introduced through problem solving as a group. The instructor guides the class through specific questions to review prior lessons and deepen understanding of important skills and strategies. Homework is assigned to review concepts learned in class.
  • Session 4: Student questions on previous content and HW are fielded. The instructor reviews stats, probability, and slope. These “advanced” concepts are perceived very difficult, but they are very “coachable”; by learning a few important concepts and algorithms, most students perform very well on this part of the exam.  Mean/median/mode are reviewed conceptually and then practically through specific practice questions. The concepts important for a solid understanding of probability are reviewed.  Slope is discussed, first in the context of y=mx+b and then expanded to include other problem types. Homework is assigned to review concepts learned in class.
  • Session 5: Student questions on previous content and HW are fielded. The instructor works with students on the essential concepts of geometry. The class covers degrees in geometric figures, area, surface area, volume, similarity, Pythagorean theorem, etc.  Learning occurs by thinking through practice questions to ensure all participants can demonstrate their understanding of the subject. Homework is assigned to review concepts learned in class.
  • Session 6: Student questions on previous content and HW are fielded. Students learn the fundamental ingredients of a successful open response. Knowing the correct answer to the OR question does not ensure a strong or even passing grade on the part of the exam. The emphasis in this lesson is how to write the OR. Once students understand how to write them, each OR question will be reviewed so students can identify the elementary student’s errors and conceptual misunderstandings, the correct answer, and an alternative solution. If you need to learn more about this course, feel free to contact us.
This highly structured course includes six 2-hour sessions that begin with basic sentence structure review and build towards mastery of the essay. In addition to reviewing writing fundamentals, the instructor highlights the components an MTEL test grader looks for when reviewing the Communication and Literacy Writing Exam. Specific test-taking and timing strategies are introduced and interwoven throughout the program. The curriculum—in-class and homework—is based on true MTEL content; there will be no surprises when you take the exam. The curriculum is a published,160-page book written specifically for the MTEL Communication and Literacy Writing exam, MTEL Magic 2nd Edition, by Chuck Zucco. The curriculum and ETI guarantee* are included with the program fee.
  • Session 1: Students review parts of speech and sentence structure, securing a strong foundation for paragraph and essay development. Development of these basic skills at the word- and sentence-levels prepare students for more advanced concepts in punctuation and grammar. Homework is assigned to review and practice concepts learned in class.
  • Session 2: Student questions on previous content and HW are fielded. Content is reviewed as needed. Concepts in punctuation, grammar, and usage are introduced though lecture, examples, and practice in session. Only content known to be on this MTEL is included. Specific strategies are introduced to assist students in understanding sentences (subject/verb, simple/compound/complex sentences, the importance of the prepositional phrase, etc.). Homework is assigned to review and practice concepts learned in class.
  • Session 3: Student questions on previous content and HW are fielded, and content is reviewed as needed. Writing skills are introduced by the instructor guiding students through the four elements of a good paragraph. Different structures of paragraphs are reviewed and practiced. Understanding paragraphs is vital for performing well on the Summary Exercise, the Written Composition, and the Multiple-Choice sections, which together comprise 65% of the writing score. Homework is assigned to review and practice concepts learned in class.
  • Session 4: Student questions on previous content and HW are fielded. Students’ homework paragraphs are shared and discussed. The instructor explains the structure of a 5-paragraph essay in preparation for the Written Composition of the exam. Sample essays are read and discussed. The instructor discusses how to plan and prepare an essay, and the group outlines the arguments for one together. Homework is assigned to review and practice concepts learned in class. Twenty MTEL-based essay topics are included for practice.
  • Session 5: Student questions on previous content and HW are fielded. Students’ essays are reviewed. Students use their new understanding of paragraph and essay construction to prepare for the Summary Exercise. Specific strategies for paraphrasing and approaching the summary are taught and practiced. Together, the class reviews written works and develops summaries according to the expectations of exam graders.  Homework is assigned to review and practice concepts learned in class.
  • Session 6: Student questions on previous content and HW are fielded. Students’ summaries are reviewed. The instructor guides students through two of the most challenging aspects of this exam: the Sentence Corrections and Paragraph Improvements. Students’ knowledge of grammar and punctuation are reviewed as the group studies strategies specific to the “Sentence Corrections” (“Revising Sentences with Errors”) section. Each error type will be examined and practiced, so students will know exactly which specific errors exist and how to fix them in each of the 7 sentences you will be presented with on the exam. Specific strategies for each type of error found in the Paragraph Improvement section (“the multiple-choice section”) of the exam will be reviewed and practiced.
